G-Dragon and Lee Hyori were supposed to debut under SM Entertainment
A recent episode of tvN‘s Name List Reveal showed that G-Dragon and Lee Hyori were signed with SM Entertainment before they debuted.
Check out the behind-story of why G-Dragon and Lee Hyori left SM Entertainment below!
G-Dragon
At the age of 13, G-Dragon competed in a dance competition and caught the eye of SM Entertainment’s Lee Soo Man himself. He was later cast by SM Entertainment and joined as a trainee.
While he was still a trainee at SM Entertainment, G-Dragon coincidentally came across Wu-Tang Clan and fell in love with hip hop. He started attending hip hop academies to learn more about it, and later caught the eye of YG Entertainment‘s Yang Hyun Suk.
In 2002, G-Dragon left SM Entertainment to sign with YG Entertainment, and later debuted as the leader of BIG BANG after 6 years of intensive training.
Lee Hyori
Lee Hyori was an avid fan of SM Entertainment’s first idol groups, H.O.T. The group’s manager saw Lee Hyori and thought she was beautiful, so he cast her to join as a trainee preparing to debut in a girl group.
Unfortunately, she left SM Entertainment due to the harsh training conditions, and signed with World Music Entertainment to prepare to debut in a hip hop girl trio called “Uptown Girl” with rapper Yoon Mirae.
She had even finished recording the album, but SM Entertainment debuted a girl trio group called S.E.S who were taking the charts by storm.
DSP Media had noticed Lee Hyori was talented and beautiful, so they met with World Music Entertainment and successfully scouted Lee Hyori to join a team of girls preparing to debut in a new girl group.
Just a month after being scouted, Lee Hyori joined as the last member of the group and finally debuted with Fin.K.L in 1998.
