While K-pop can often look fun and glamorous to fans and outsiders, it can also hold some of the industry’s darkest secrets. Most of the time, people are unaware of what really goes on behind the scenes and that’s, even more, the case when it comes to scandals.
Here are some of the biggest K-Pop scandals that most people might not even be aware of.
1. Jessica’s Alleged Molestation
Back in 2010, fans spotted Jessica in an uncomfortable situation when she was on stage at a music festival. During the end of festivals, all the performers usually come on stage to do an ending song along with some of the station’s organizers.
Towards the end, fans noticed Jessica looking uncomfortable and repeatedly glancing back at one of the officials who was standing behind her.
After saying a few words to the audience, she was seen whispering something to Hyoyeon who immediately glared at the guy and moved Jessica away from him.
While it was not immediately obvious that he had done something inappropriate to her, all other videos of this event were flagged and removed from video sites sans this one.

2. Singer Ali’s Rape Revelation
Soloist Ali wrote a song about a rape case that happened in Korea in 2008, which received a lot of backlash for the choice of words used in the lyrics.
When she came forward to apologize for the song, she confessed that she wrote it using her own experience because she had also been raped around the same time as that case.
She revealed she wanted it to be a song of comfort for the victim from someone who had also gone through the same thing. She further shared that her rapist was barely charged with anything, only 200 hours of community service following a suspended 4-year sentence and has yet to apologize for the incident.
3. Girls’ Generation Tiffany’s Alleged On-Screen Molestation
During Girls’ Generation’s earlier days, they guested often on variety shows and it was on one of these that fans noticed one of the other guests touching Tiffany inappropriately.
This happened during a game where they were supposed to keep kicking something to keep it in the air.
During the segment, it looked like the other guest got too into the game and lost his balance dragging down Tiffany who was standing behind him.
On the way down, however, fans noticed his arms were touching inappropriate places on Tiffany’s body.
4. K-Pop’s Biggest Bullying Scandal
This happened way back in the days of OG K-pop, 1998 to be exact, and involved one of the earliest co-ed groups, S#arp. The two female members of the group were Seo Jiyoung and Lee Jihye and the group was created by Seo Jiyoung’s family, one of the wealthiest families in the industry at the time.

Seo Jiyoung would constant hit and terrorize Lee Jihye, even bringing in her mum and boyfriend to bully her as well. It eventually got so bad that they had to disband, which happened in 2002.
It was alleged that Seo Jiyoung tried to pay off their manager to lie for her sake at the press conference but he couldn’t do it and ended up revealing everything.
This led to incredible public backlash for Seo Jiyoung and the end of their relationship.
5. Son Ho Young and His Girlfriend’s Suicide
In 2013, former G.O.D member Son Ho Young was shocked to find out that his girlfriend at the time had committed suicide in his car.
The police reported that she was found along with used briquette sleeping pills and a suicide note.
The singer was so devastated when he found out that it was reported he tried to take his own life in the same way.
However, his coal briquette ended up catching fire leading to his rescue from the vehicle.
6. Deux Kim Sungjae’s Death
In 1995, Kim Sungjae, a member of famous Korean hip hop duo Deux was found dead in a hotel, the night of his solo debut devastating many fans and fellow member Lee Hyundo.
The autopsy showed that he had strange needle marks in his right hand and that he seemed to have been injected with a large dose of animal tranquilizer.
Because the marks were in his dominant hand, the case was marked as a homicide with his girlfriend as the prime suspect.
She was a non-celebrity and she happened to be with him the night of his death and there was also a witness who stated that she had bought the animal tranquilizer from their pharmacy.
Because of that, she was initially sentenced to death for murder but her family intervened after the sentencing.
Following the third trial, however, the witness changed his statement and the charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.
Until today, no one has been charged with his murder making this case one of the most tragic events to have happened in K-Pop history.
